New School Tattoo Style

New School Tattoo Style

new school tattoo style

We have all heard the term “old school” but new school? New school tattoos are not actually that new. Indeed, they first came to light in the very late 1970s and only in the Californian region (where else?).

By the 1980s, new school tattoos came to prominence across the rest of the United States and largely into Europe too. This whacky style of tattoo art peaked around the late 1980s and into the 1990s but since those heady days it has waned somewhat.

It was absolutely an art form of its time and the style tended to be cartoon or caricature in nature. The body art tended to reflect characters like Popeye, Homer Simpson, superheroes or Top Cat. The lines were bold and the colours were vivid and at times, even garish.

Californians even experimented with science fiction characters, celebrities or sporting heroes of a favourite team. It was a comic style and the art was all about exaggeration. The style does still exist today but in a new format.

You can still find many new school tattoo artists camped out in stores and parlours around the San Francisco Bay area. Here, psychedelic cartoon characters and fearful adversaries can work their way onto the arms of many west coast hipsters.

Hip Hop Culture and New School

The style of new school tattoo designs was also popular among the followers of the hip hop culture. The sharp and jagged edges of the letters and the format where each one would look exaggerated or blown up before being coloured in with a range of bright contrasts was a popular theme. It emulated the graffiti style of the time and the subject matter and characters were always a little fantastical.

New School Art Has Evolved

The new format of this type of tattoo art is slightly evolved from the styles we saw in the 1980s. New school takes a different approach to traditional styles. Eagles and hearts are still a part of new school tattoo designs, but they would tend to be more like a cartoon bird of prey or a beating heart.

New school tattoo artwork tends to be all about having very few rules and lots of bright and vivid colours. It is art nouveau and Andy Warhol rolled into one and its popularity is very much alive and well in the ink parlours of the western world today.

Trending Tattoos in 2019

Trending Tattoos in 2019

Trending Tattoos of 2019Tattoos are as popular now than at any time in living memory and there are several trending tattoos in 2019. This form of personal art is going to stay with you for the rest of your life, so it’s always worth knowing which trendy tattoos are out there and look at the themes that seem to be ageless and always on trend.

Tattoo artists have an excellent knowledge of what is fashionable and trendy. Like a fashion designer is to today’s dress sense, a tattoo artist can set trends and improve on the ones everyone seems to want to own.

Minimalist Body Art

If we chart back to the 1950s and 60s, when inking was popular among those in the armed forces, there was a time when tattoo pens seemed to be extraordinarily thick. There was also little regulation, unlike today.

During the 1980s the tattoo artist’s pen became a lot thinner and the technique improved to the point where body art used fine lines that appeared very thin. This trend still exists very much today.

A lot of tattoos in tiny detail are finding their way onto people’s fingers. Tattoo artists have often recommended against this practice, as finger tats can fade fast. But that has not stopped this becoming the latest in trendy tattoos.

Fine-line Tattooing

This is particularly trendy in the east coast areas of the United States. The subject matter of the art can vary – as does the choice of colour – but the style and design is to think thin and make it artistic.

Minimalist body art and trendy tattoos are big because they are so small. The detail has to be tiny but accurate and the general idea is for the voyeur to be forced to study up close and personal. The accolades then come pouring out after the close inspection.

Lettering

Many will remember the days when we were warned not to put names on our bodies. It was for fear the words would later return to haunt us: the name of an ex-boy or girlfriend, a football team or their latest signing [who would later transfer to a rival team]. But lettering has now come back as one of the trendiest tattoo methods, but the words are very different.

Gone are the ex-partners names, teams and even “love” and “hate” jotted on the fingers. In: the messages of something that expresses you as a person. Moreover, a meaningful script that belongs just to you.
